Kunsthaus Tacheles, 1991- 1993
In 1990, a group of East Berlin artists occupied the huge ruin (9,000 square meters) of a former department store on Oranienburger Strasse. They named it Kunsthaus Tacheles (Yiddish for "straight talk"). The Art House Tacheles turned into a base for local and foreign artists. It was a place where first contacts were made between citizens from the East and the West: at legendary Cafe Zapata, and in the cavernous basement techno-house dance club "Ständige Vertretung."
