Berlin Mitte Underground 1991- 1994

"Berlin-Mitte Underground shows a district which seems to be suspended in mid-air. Otaño Ugarte has captured this exceptional period between the fall of the Wall and gentrification."

- Der Tagesspiegel (2010) by Daniel Grinsted.

This early work of Otaño Ugarte's (age 25 back then) focusses, in most general terms, on the demise of the Berlin Wall. It is an exploration of the historic event, specifically its impact on art squat circles and the underground community of artists, she readily encountered upon her arrival in the city. The clash of two worlds, of up to that point opposing political systems (communism and capitalism) fostered the speedy emergence of spaces and locations for experimentation in the arts, with different forms of coexistence, of communication, and of subcultural life.
